My Hobby Room![]()
I have always been fascinated by miniatures of one sort or another. When I was little, I would build detailed little "houses" for everything from marbles to action figures, devoting hours of play time to get the perfect setting. As I -ahem- matured, I began to realize that I could pursue this hobby into adulthood. So began my collection of dollhouse-scaled miniatures. Recently, though, I began to feel a lack. Lack of space, mostly. My collection was quickly outgrowing the available space, and I still had no decent way to display it. I began to become interested in the smaller scales (1/24 and 1/48 as opposed to 1/12) as a way to clear up space and satisfy my desire for ever more tiny things. This past May, as I was on vacation to Victoria, B.C., I stepped into a scale model shop, looking for various things to use for dollhouse minis, when I spotted model house kits in an even smaller scale - 1/87th! (model RR scale). Within 3 hours, not only was I hooked and slightly over-spent, I was embarked on a new hobby (or a new branch of an old one)- scale models! That's not the whole story of course; I had also picked up a old model RR scenery book to help me with the landscaping of a 1/48 scale scene. Though it didn't help with that as much as I'd planned (I was looking for snow directions), I became fascinated with the various tips, tricks and techniques used by model railroaders to make their layouts super-detailed and amazingly life-like (considering the scale). When I came home, I checked out my local used bookstore, and came across some old Fine Scale Modeler magazines, which helped me a bit more with the snow. And one day I came across another publication - on model dioramas this time. It changed my (mini) world...! My Hobby Room has welcomed more than
